Islamic organization to give away meat to the needy Wednesday in New Brunswick, Plainfield

NEW BRUNSWICK — Those in danger of going hungry this holiday season will get help today from the local Islamic community.
The Islamic Circle of North America is holding a Zabiha meat distribution in conjunction with the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha. Zabiha refers to the ritual slaughter of an animal, which on Eid al-Adha is done to mark the prophet Abraham's slaughter of an animal.
"Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his own son as a test and when he was willing to do that, God agreed to replace him with an animal instead of the son," said Tariq Zamir, an organizer of the event.
The distributions will take place in eight cities statewide today. In Central Jersey, meat will be distributed at the Masjid Huda, 167 Remsen Ave. in New Brunswick, and at the Center for Islamic Enlightenment, 147 North Ave. in Plainfield. Both distributions will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Muslims mark Eid al-Adha by slaughtering an animal, if they can afford one, and dividing the meat into three parts, Zamir said. One portion is for the family. One portion is given to friends or relatives. The third portion is to be given to the poor or needy.
Zamir said Muslims in Third-World countries have no problem finding needy people to donate the meat to, but it's a bit more difficult in America. The Islamic Circle of North America helps to solve that problem, he said, by collecting the meat and distributing it to the community through its relief programs.
"It's helping the Muslim community by helping them find places where they can donate so that it gets to the deserving, and it is helping the larger community in general by reaching out to people in need," he said.
Zamir also said the distribution also helps to create a better understanding of the Islamic faith.
The meat will be given to anyone in need, he said. Statewide, the group hopes to help 1,000 families. |
